The latest release of data on the regional distribution of UK Research and Innovation’s (UKRI) funding spend covers financial years 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021.

Data on spend on UKRI’s institutes has been added offering even more detail than the previous year’s publication.

The findings include information on funding from the research councils, Innovate UK and Research England and a UKRI total.

Data on comparable research and development (R&D) funds from the funding bodies in the devolved nations is provided to ensure a fuller picture of the UK’s R&D landscape.

The report:

  • maps the distribution of research and development spend across the country
  • gives contextual data for the different types of UK funding
  • covers two financial years, 2019 to 2020 and 2020 to 2021.

Analysis shows that all nations and regions of the UK benefit from some UKRI support.

When reviewing the data, you must consider the regional contexts explained in the report. We explain how the data was produced in the methodology section of the report.

Geographical distribution of spend data

The financial data is the amount of funding spent in the financial years April 2019 to March 2020 and from April 2020 to March 2021. It is not necessarily the amount being allocated in that year, except for Research England and the quality-related equivalent data from the devolved administrations (DAs).
