Details

The report makes a number of recommendations for particle physics technology research and development (R&D) in the UK in light of international roadmapping activities.

Technology and Accelerator Advisory Board (TAAB)

STFC TAAB said that it very strongly endorses the report.

Following the positive Comprehensive Spending Review outcome, TAAB urges STFC that the planned rebuild of the core programme should be done in a way to address the identified R&D needs (including software and computing) and current projects.

It welcomed the recent Early-Stage Research and Development Scheme funding opportunity and points out that it should address some of the issues in the report.

However, none of the above in itself provides the programmatic-scale strategic approach recommended by PPTAP, and TAAB urges STFC to initiate a call in the coming months for R&D specifically targeted at the roadmaps and participating in European or global R&D programmes, aimed at (re)directing future funds (in-house and programmes directorate) in a more strategic manner.

TAAB should advise on how any future call related to this report is communicated to the community as well as the funding call terms and conditions.

Executive Board

STFC Executive Board said that it welcomes the publication of the PPTAP report and the strong endorsement from TAAB.

The report, and TAAB endorsement, emphasises the need for a strategic approach to long-term technology development for particle physics, aligned with the international roadmap(s), and encouraging industry engagement at all technology readiness levels.

This report is an important input to the current strategic review of particle physics in the UK and will inform STFC’s response to that review when complete.
