Tom Britten

Tom Britten is the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Chief Operating Officer (since 22 March 2021).

Tom joined STFC from the University of Bath where he was Commercial Director and Board member responsible for a number of corporate activities. The service and surplus generated by these activities has grown in recent years and directly supports Bath’s investment in research and education.

Prior to that, he worked at University of Warwick where he was responsible for both the University’s established commercial businesses like and developing new opportunities.

The experiences at Bath and Warwick have helped Tom develop a passion for research and education and their positive impact on people’s lives.

Tom graduated from Newcastle University and pursued a career in retail, which included nearly twenty years at Tesco. His early roles there were part of the stores division in marketing and then buying.

After that, Tom moved to the Retail Services division which was set up to launch and grow new businesses. This period included roles at Tesco Bank (a joint venture with Royal Bank of Scotland), the home shopping business and latterly as Managing Director of Tesco Mobile Europe.

Outside work Tom is a regular sailor and squash player – the latter includes being captain of a club team. However, in the words of Mohammed Ali, his mind is increasingly making commitments that his body is unable to keep.
