UKRI is committed to expanding its data collection and analysis capabilities on our funding applicants and recipients. The publication of the data is an important part of our work to identify and address issues within the funding system.
Providing accessible data and information facilitates analysis and insight for our sector and ensures we are subject to constructive external scrutiny. This will support us and the wider sector as we seek to drive transformative change.
Detailed ethnicity analysis
In December 2020 we published results by detailed ethnicity categories to understand the variation within the ethnic minority group.
Results are presented by ethnicities as well as ethnic groups aggregated across UKRI for three application roles and studentships.
You can:
- read our data narrative report (PDF, 4.8MB)
- download the data for award rates, numbers and proportion of applicants and awardees as Excel files:
Each file contains results by application roles and studentships. Results are not provided for fellows by detailed ethnicities as numbers become small with further disaggregation.
We are using the data, together with other evidence and engagement with the research and innovation community, to help us identify what we need to do to increase equality, diversity and inclusion across the research and innovation system.
Read about our approach to address these findings.
We will publish detailed ethnicity data every year.
Diversity data for all research councils
In June 2020 we made harmonised diversity data available for seven research councils covering the previous five financial years. We will continue to provide this data annually and the councils will no longer publish individual data sets.
There are four protected characteristics (sex, age, ethnicity and disability) in the new data set which covers:
- principal investigator (PI) and co-investigator grant applicants and recipients
- fellowship applicants and awardees
- PhD studentship starts.
This was the first time we published data on award values for the different groups. We also began collecting data on additional characteristics as well as employing advanced forms of data analysis. That allows to better understand trends as we develop our work.
Detailed information on how the dataset was produced, along with interpretative guidance and a summary of findings, is available in the data narrative report (PDF, 600KB).
You can access data via interactive Tableau dashboards. Instructions on how to use the dashboards are available in the first tab on the left at the top of the page under ‘Guidance’.
Alternatively, download the data as Excel files:
- principal investigators – award rate, application proportion and award proportion (Excel, 63KB)

Before releasing this data, UKRI responded to an initial data request from the Science and Technology Committee’s inquiry into the impact of science funding policy on equality, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (PDF, 3MB).
