In the run-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), we asked our researchers to tell us about their work and the challenges of tackling climate change.

Dr Tahrat Shahid is the food systems portfolio leader and gender advisor across all of the six portfolios of the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF).

The fund is designed to finance research so that academics across the world can work together using science and technologies to solve some of the challenges of climate change.

Tahrat is currently working on research into the people taking up roles and has been focusing on farming communities. She says women are not always recognised as part of an agricultural labour force so they may not always get access to some of the scientific solutions that could help to mitigate some of the effects of climate change.

Tahrat says:

It’s really important we keep doing this kind of work where we’re combining people and researchers from all different sectors in a participatory way when it comes to the kind of people that will be taking up these solutions.

It’s an ongoing conversation and I’m really excited that we’re going to keep this conversation going come 9 November in Glasgow.
