We are investing £28 million through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to develop next-generation artificial intelligence and control systems for driverless cars.
The investment is funding three projects.
DRIVEN will deploy a fleet of fully autonomous vehicles within and between cities, culminating in autonomous journeys within London and Oxford.
No connected and autonomous vehicle trial at this level of complexity and integration has ever been attempted anywhere in the world.
Robopilot will develop and demonstrate autonomous driving for an electric delivery van. The technology can be adapted for larger trucks and buses in the future, opening up the light commercial vehicles market.
The demonstration will use a ten-mile trial route on mixed public roads in all weathers, and include driverless self-parking.
Streetwise will demonstrate the technology, safety validation methods, insurance and service models that are developed to deliver an autonomous personal mobility solution.
The project will show that the technology is now advanced enough to be safe in urban environments, and intelligent enough to interact effectively with human drivers, road users and pedestrians.
