In our 101 Jobs That Change the World series, we met three skilled craftspeople who have creative jobs in science:

  • a mapmaker
  • a scientific glassblower
  • a fieldwork technician.

Laura Gerrish

Laura Gerrish is a cartographer for the British Antarctic Survey.

She produces up-to-date maps of Antarctica to help researchers study the continent and plan expeditions safely.

Terri Adams

Terri Adams is the Glass Design and Fabrication Facility Manager for the University of Oxford.

She works with researchers to design and create bespoke pieces of glassware for experiments.

Ian Patmore is a fieldwork technician at University College London’s Geography department.

He uses his creative skills to supply equipment that meets the needs of scientists. Whether that’s adapting something existing, or building something new from scratch.
