Research England allocates funding to higher education providers in England to support research and knowledge exchange activities.
The core funding we allocate is calculated using formulae. We sometimes refer to these as formula-based funds. Our main formula-based funds are recurrent, which means they reoccur every year and don’t tend to change much.
Our recurrent funding includes:
- Quality-Related Research (QR) funding, informed by the outcomes of the Research Excellence Framework (REF)
- the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF).
You do not apply for recurrent funding.
In all cases your higher education provider must comply with Research England’s terms and conditions. If there are further requirements you need to meet we will let you know.
