Introduction

One way of delivering impact from your research is to commercialise it, for example through spin-out companies or licensing.

The idea of commercialising social science research might not be familiar to many, and examples are relatively rare. In a 2016 Economic and Social Research Council-commissioned report, it was found that fewer than one in 50 respondents in the social sciences had commercialised their work through patents, licensing or spin-outs.
